OUGD501 - Theory into practice - Presentation boards

Final Crit

OUGD501 - Theory into Practice - Final images

The way I have bound the tissue together allows for a bottle stop to be attached simply to reinforce the design, where every other design decision was to communicate a theory I wanted to carry an element of design through to the overall product.

The tissue has worked well in covering the darker brown wrapping, when revealed the paper still carries an aesthetic of alcohol packaging which I was inspired to recreate through my research.

The trace wraps round the bottle well and the design decision to place the symbol of happiness on the outer layer with a question mark worked out exactly how I wanted it too. Upon reflection I would have ideally had one long roll of trace paper so there are no breaks between the sheets, this was only possible on a commercial scale which was unaffordable. The theory and ASA guidelines are still presented in a theoretical way however.

The vinyl stickers came out very well and aesthetically strong on the dark background, I cured the stickers to the glass by heating with a heat gun.

The representation of the context through practical development of my work has not been executed to the highest standard however I have really enjoyed the challenge of displaying a theory of Barthes messages in advertising through a physical product.

OUGD505 - Exhibition Poster

Starting point

For this short brief, I wanted to keep things simple and highly visual with the use of an instalation theme running through the whole project.

The poster itself ideally will not be a flat piece on standard stock, rather it would be a physical piece of ususual material that communicates a message in a visual way with impact rather than clever copywriting or unusual print techniques.

Initial Research

Looking into instalation posters or promotions that use installation has been relevant to my ideas generation because I realise that I can produce a 3D piece of graphic design rather than a flat poster.

OUGD501 - Theory into Practice - Format

Visuals, format and layouts.

The publication must have a unique format, which is more about an exploration of the many messages that go through the mind when picking up a product on the shelf. This way of hand crafting will not only add complexity to the message but symbolise what the mind must decide on when picking up the product. This collection of images has helped to inform my practice by giving a visual identity to my theory and ideas.

Further Imagery

This piece of packaging is influenced directly by the brand image and advertising aesthetics of the Levis tab logo. The overall format of the piece of packaging is simplistic yet is easily recognisable as Levis, most importantly there is a blank canvas for a lifestyle image to be created in the mind of the subject. The advertising has already reinforced the lifestyle, the packaging acts as the delivery of the lifestyle.

We see the target audience is a subject that would want to be a part of lifestyle which is led by young attractive and athletic males and females under 30. Packaging does not need to be aesthetically complicated, rather it needs to deliver the product which has already been sold in advertising campaigns

"The pill style trays for the album 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space' were packed under strict pharmaceutical manufacturing conditions. Each blister contained a 3 inch CD featuring one of twelve tracks which had to be popped through foil in order to be played.

All credits were printed onto a medicine information sheet and contained warnings on the possible side effects of listening to the band.

The album was later reissued, and a new limited edition black version produced."

Advertising can be visualised in physical form through the product packaging, it is easy for me to print onto or etch acrylic much like this one using the college facilities.

Barthes message systems could be carried across a set of branded items which are enforcing a lifestyle.
