OUGD501 - Theory into Practice - Project Proposal

Concept Proposal

The proposal to my peers was delivered in the following format:

  • Main points of the essay,
  • What I was arguing in the essay,
  • Basic research which helped direct my decisions,
  • What I wanted to produce,
  • The target audience.

Feedback

The proposal went surprisingly well considering the short amount of time for responses from the group. Having raised some issues that could help steer the project to a better direction, I should focus on the following areas raised by my peers:

  • Has it been done before?,
  • Consider the use of colour as signifiers,
  • This is predominantly male focused,
  • What other pieces of design can be a part of the range of deliverables?
Post-crit decisions

After the crit I was left feeling like I had missed the brief, due to the fact that I wanted to write in more depth about the topic, it was my intention of focussing the design aspect into a series of minimalistic posters. The design aspect was too simple and did not suggest enough communication of a theory.

It is my decision now to create a much more tactile publication that is presented in a way that fits my chosen topic.

Action Plan
Research alcohol companies and their drinks.
Analyse the content and histories of specific products.
Sketch out design ideas.
Create a grid structure for the posters.

A New Direction

Title of the publication: Drink up.
Communicating: The relationship of visual signifiers of suggested benefits alcohol to the actual content of the drink being presented.
Intending to: educate and inform
A group of: young, professional, educated men who appreciate alcohol.
State the message/concept: Truth behind a hidden meaning
How I will produce: A tactile and multi layered beer label with full product wrapping and a drinks mat.
